SAT and ACT
SAT and ACT Overview
The SAT and ACT are internationally recognized university admission examinations used to evaluate a student’s preparedness for higher education. These tests involve strict timing and structured assessments, requiring students to demonstrate strong academic skills while managing time effectively. On average, candidates have about one minute and twenty seconds per question, making efficient pacing a critical factor for achieving a strong result.
Although both exams measure similar academic competencies, they differ in their structure and subject emphasis. The Digital SAT focuses primarily on evidence-based reading, writing, and mathematical reasoning, while the ACT assesses performance in English, mathematics, and reading, and also includes an optional science section. Because of these differences, successful preparation must be specifically adapted to the format, question types, and timing of each test.
At Brightworth Exam Prep, students receive personalised guidance and one-on-one instruction tailored to the requirements of both the SAT and ACT. Our preparation approach helps students develop effective strategies, strengthen core academic skills, and build the confidence needed to perform successfully under exam conditions.
Today, most universities across the United States accept either the SAT or the ACT as part of their admissions process, and an increasing number of international institutions also recognize these exams as reliable indicators of a student’s academic readiness and potential for success at university level.

THE SAT & ACT TEST SECTIONS
SAT&ACT

The SAT and ACT are widely recognized university admission exams used to assess students’ academic readiness for higher education. At Brightworth Exam Prep, we support students with personalised one-to-one preparation, helping them understand each exam’s format, strengthen core skills, and improve performance under timed conditions.
SAT
The SAT is a standardized exam lasting about 2 hours and 14 minutes. It evaluates analytical thinking and problem-solving skills through two multiple-choice sections: Mathematics and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. Because of its fast pace, effective time management and accuracy are essential.
Scoring:
Each section is scored between 200 and 800, with a maximum total score of 1600.
Test Administration:
Since January 2025, the SAT has been delivered in digital format at authorised testing centres and is offered eight times annually worldwide.
ACT
The ACT is another widely accepted standardised exam lasting approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes. It is divided into several sections that assess key academic skills:
English – 45 minutes
Mathematics – 60 minutes
Reading – 35 minutes
Science – 35 minutes
Optional Writing – 40 minutes
Scoring:
Each section receives a score from 1 to 36, and the overall composite score (also from 1 to 36) is calculated as the average of the section results.
Test Administration:
The ACT is conducted at official testing centres worldwide, including selected schools and universities, with locations assigned by ACT, Inc.
Test Fee:
Registration costs approximately £54 for the standard test and £74 for the ACT with the optional Writing section.
The Quantitative Reasoning sections of the SAT and ACT assess key mathematical skills, including algebra, arithmetic, geometry, and data analysis. Questions test a student’s ability to apply mathematical concepts to solve problems using logical reasoning and efficient time management.
Students must be comfortable with fractions, percentages, ratios, equations, and basic algebra, focusing on accuracy and problem-solving rather than advanced mathematics.
Calculator rules differ by exam. The Digital SAT allows calculator use throughout the Maths section with a built-in graphing calculator, while the ACT permits calculators only in the Maths section with approved models.
At Brightworth Exam Prep, students receive personalised 1-on-1 preparation to strengthen mathematical reasoning, improve speed, and approach quantitative questions with confidence.
Verbal Reasoning
Quantitative Reasoning
The SAT and ACT Tests
The Verbal Reasoning section evaluates skills in reading comprehension, logical analysis, and critical reasoning through questions based on short passages and arguments. Candidates must interpret key ideas, understand relationships between statements, identify main points, and recognize the author’s intent or tone.
Some questions focus on evaluating arguments, requiring students to determine which option best strengthens, weakens, or logically supports a given claim. These tasks emphasize clear reasoning and analytical thinking, rather than prior subject knowledge.
At Brightworth Exam Prep, students receive personalised one-on-one coaching to improve reading speed, strengthen logical analysis, and develop effective strategies for answering verbal questions accurately under time pressure.
SAT and ACT Scoring Overview
The SAT and ACT total scores provide an overall measure of a student’s performance across all tested sections, evaluating verbal, mathematical, and analytical reasoning skills that indicate readiness for university study. At Brightworth Exam Prep, students receive personalised guidance to understand these scoring systems and develop strategies to maximise their results.
Both exam scores remain valid for five years, allowing candidates to submit them to universities or scholarship programmes across multiple application cycles.
Although the SAT and ACT share the same purpose, their scoring structures differ. The SAT uses a scale from 400 to 1600, combining two sections:
Reading and Writing (200–800)
Maths (200–800)
The ACT uses a composite score from 1 to 36, calculated as the average of four section scores: English, Maths, Reading, and Science.
For admission to highly competitive universities, students typically aim for 1400 or higher on the SAT or 30 or higher on the ACT, scores that indicate strong academic ability and preparation.
After completing the exam, candidates initially see an unofficial score summary showing estimated section results. The official score report, which universities require for admission, is usually released online within two to three weeks through the student’s College Board (SAT) or ACT account.
